Perspectives EU ETS strategy advise
Maximising your allocation, minimising your compliance costs
Regardless of whether you enjoyed a surplus or a deficit of EU-allowances (EUAs) in the first phase of the EU ETS, it is clear that allocation plans for the second phase will be stricter and are likely to cause significant allowance deficits for many operators from 2008 onwards. With Perspectives’ broad experience regarding both compliance markets and CDM/JI, we support the optimisation of your performance in the EU ETS.
Maximising allocation, developing an appropriate trading strategy, optimising the operation of your generation capacities and acting quickly and flexibly on the EUA-markets are all crucial elements for good performance in the short- and medium-term. In the long-term, the most significant chance for success lies in the Kyoto-Mechanisms CDM/JI. CERs and ERUs, which can be used for compliance purposes, cannot be generated from one day to the next. Considering the 20-30% target of the EU for 2020 and the potential 40% target for Germany, it makes a lot of sense to develop a proper CDM/JI strategy sooner rather than later. Perspectives supports you in determining your demand – not only in quantitative terms, but also regarding the most suitable investment approach for you, such as buying into a CER/ERU fund, buying credits from a risk-appropriate project, or investing capital in your own project activity
Our services include:
- Developing a CDM/JI strategy that fits your needs, with proper design and the risk diversification of your project portfolio
- Advice on strategy and support of the application for EUA-allocation for new and existing installations and installation compounds
- Strategic advice regarding potential restructuring/technical adaptations and capacity additions to existing installations
- Compliance work: monitoring schemes, monitoring reports, dialogue with your national authority
Working on your emissions trading strategy, we are utilising our broad experience from the first phase of the EU ETS. Perspectives has accompanied the allocation processes of 30 installations with annual CO2-emissions totalling more than 7 million tons. Applications for early actions, joint installation, set-up of monitoring schemes and elaboration of monitoring reports as well as risk CO2-evaluation for new installations complement our service portfolio. Our staff was engaged before the implementation of the EU ETS was even decided. Sonja Butzengeiger worked in her personal capacity with the Germany Emissions Trading Group under the leadership of the German Environment Ministry from 2001-2006.
