Feasibility assessment
Perspectives Feasibility assessment
Knowing your project’s chances
Not all projects that reduce CO2 emissions or other greenhouse gases can be registered as a CDM/JI project. While some limitations in the UNFCCC-regulations are quite obvious (e.g. no positive decision on the eligibility of a certain project type as Carbon Capture and Sequestration), others are hidden in the detailed baseline specifications.
Therefore, whether you have just heard about or you have already gained some experience in CDM/JI, what you are looking for as a project developer is a reliable independent assessment of the chances and risks of your project idea to become registered as a CDM/JI project. An assessment of the amounts of CERs/ERUs that can be expected from the project activity is also essential for an investment decision.
Due to our long-standing experience in CDM/JI feasibility assessment and CDM/JI project management across various types of projects and countries, we have the required expertise to clearly identify the CDM/JI potential of your project idea in terms of the:
- probability of achieving CDM/JI validation/registration,
- estimation of The CER/ERU volumes to be expected, and
- timelines for potential registration of the project as a CDM/JI project.
Our independent assessment reflects the current UNFCCC-regulations as well as the situation in the host country while including empirical evidence from validated and registered CDM/JI projects. Perspectives maintains a database of all CDM/JI projects that have been submitted since December 2003. Every month we record the current status of all submitted projects. We are therefore in a unique position to provide you with precise information on how the CDM/JI projects of the type you have been offered have fared under CDM/JI so far. This includes for example:
- an overview of the estimated CER/ERU volumes of all projects of the same kind in validation stage or registered CDM projects, and
- the investigation of the deviation (in %) from issued CER/ERUs to estimated CER/ERU volumes from registered projects.
Background:
Before a project idea can be registered as a CDM/JI project, an application for the project must be made for CDM/JI status in a CDM/JI registration process (referred to as the CDM/JI project cycle) laid down by two international rule-making bodies,
- the CDM Executive Board (CDM EB)
- the JI Supervisory Committee (JISC).
The international rules for CDM/JI do not allow all types of projects to qualify under CDM/JI. Proposed projects need to comply with a set of criteria laid down by the rule-making bodies. Additionally, the CER/ERU volumes that can be expected from your project idea need to be calculated on the basis of an approved methodology. Therefore, the availability of an approved methodology that is applicable to your project idea is paramount for successful CDM/JI project implementation. If no such methodology is available, we can assist you in the development of a methodology (also see CDM/JI methodology development).
