Voluntary Offsets
Advancing ecologically sound offsetting activities
Voluntary compensation is the non-compulsory offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions caused by a certain activity or event. This typically happens by retiring the respective amount of emission allowances or emission reduction certificates.
The motivations for voluntary offsetting are manifold. While most players see voluntary offsetting as part of their corporate responsibility and/or part of their marketing and image strategy, aspects of climate liability could become another central driver for voluntary compensation in the future.
Regardless of the motivation behind offsetting, proper implementation is fundamental to achieving the desired ecological and economic effects.
