In June, 2021 Morocco submitted an updated NDC under the Paris Agreement, strengthening the objectives of the first NDC from 2016. The Moroccan NDC presents a target of 45.5% by 2030, including an unconditional target of 18.3%. These new targets reflect a significant increase in Morocco’s greenhouse gas mitigation ambition.
Perspectives experts Igor Shishlov and Axel Michaelowa played a central and guiding role in developing Morocco’s NDC by building on long-standing and close interactions with key Moroccan institutions. With the support and collaboration of their key partner on the ground, Mounir Temmam, consultations with a wide range of sectoral stakeholders were made possible. The experts ensured that the role of Article 6 market mechanisms as well as the mitigation potential of the cooling sector were strongly reflected in the NDC. They also thoroughly updated the reference scenario and aligned the parameters for the sectoral contributions, which originally came in very different formats.
Morocco’s NDC continues to be one of the most ambitious ones worldwide. It is a model of transparency.
