As authoritarian leaders are increasingly coming to power in large countries and will not be able to apply a climate change denial strategy in the long term, those leaders who do not want to lose support may have to look for quick and cheap solutions to address climate change. One technology of choice may become solar radiation modification (SRM) through stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). Axel Michaelowa discusses the negative implications of SRM as a “pandora’s box technology” and why the international community needs to address the threat of populist leaders applying SRM in a rogue manner. Multilateral entities and the international climate change community must work cohesively in a coalition to prevent unilateral application of SRM while reducing overall global greenhouse gas emissions to prevent dangerous climate change.
