Senior Researcher and Head of Business Field «Carbon Dioxide Removals»
Matthias is Senior Researcher and Head of Business Field «Carbon Dioxide Removals» with Perspectives Climate Research. He has over a decade of experience working also on other climate policy topics including carbon markets, sectoral mitigation policies, national mitigation targets, and UN climate negotiations. He is also a renown expert on the governance and science of Solar Radiation Modification (or “Solar Geoengineering”) and the Sustainable Development Goals.
He has supported the development of mitigation policies, national mitigation targets, co-authored studies and advised government and private sector delegations during UN climate negotiations since 2012. Previous clients include instutions such as the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, governmental agencies (including development cooperation agencies such as GIZ, AfD, and SNV) and government ministries in Africa, Europe, and Asia, as well as private sector companies. Besides his work with Perspectives, Matthias is finalizing a PhD at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development at Utrecht University.
Matthias has an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland and an extensive global network including by working at the IASS Potsdam and study visits to Oxford University, Harvard University, Yale University and the University of Heidelberg.
